October 28, 2008 Che Guevara
I was walking behind a group of Malays this afternoon on the Padang1 and I noticed one of the chaps had the iconic Che Guevara t-shirt on. I did feel like asking him how goes the revolution but I realized he might not actually see the funny side of it.
Of course, there was nothing funny about our dear Che who is probably turning in his grave at the thought of his image being used to feed the wheels of capitalism. Ernest “Che” Guevara was in fact Argentinian, not Cuban as many believe. Placed in charge of the notorious La Cabana prison, he is responsible from anything between a few hundred to several thousand deaths, most without fair trials. He incited insurrections and spread his (ultimately flawed) revolutionary ideals in countries in South America, Africa and Europe. He also brought the world that much closer to nuclear annihilation2 with his role in securing Russian nukes for Cuba that preceded the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Yeah, this guy is a real hero. Perhaps I should walk around with an inspiring picture of Hitler on my threads? Or even better, let’s make it more locally relevant, and print a few hundred t-shirts with that iconic image of Mas Selamat. Political stupidity should be punished.
- The Padang is a field used for recreation, F1 gatherings, and impressive displays of might by the 72,500 strong Singapore Armed Forces. Also used as an impromptu gathering point for expatriates by the Japanese during World War 2. [↩]
- Yes, the real minutes to midnight. [↩]

I would like to nominate Pol Pot, Idi Amin and maybe also Mussolini for a good measure of fascism.
Btw, I did see in Singapore a guy that had a pin on his bag with a swastika (in white/red/black and not the inverse Buddhist version). He was probably a uni student or something. I don’t expect them to know anything about it, they’re a product of their society and education system.

Yeah, but we’re out of the dark ages now and have Internet. Ignorance is not an excuse.
