September 23, 2008 7,107 Flavours @ Marina Square
Being adventurous, and inspired by my mate Tony who just came back from the Philippines, I suggested that we try out some Filipino food for a change. I remembered this dish called Crispy Pata that I had once with my maid and her family in Hong Kong for her birthday. Consisting of deep fried pork leg or hock, it has a really crispy skin to it not too dissimilar to pork scratchings which I am nuts for.
We ended up in this place at Marina Square called 7,107 Flavours that serves up Filipino food. So named because of the 7,107 islands that make up the Philippine archipelago, I think. Although there were less than 7,107 dishes on the menu, We ordered too much because we had the crispy pata which really should be shared with a group rather than the two of us. This was complemented with lumpiang ubod1 and tinolang manok2 and an excellent fried rice cooked with soy, vinegar, and garlic. The food was good3 although we weren’t too hot on the funky lumpiangs4.
I would heartily recommend the place to people although I would suggest going there as a group of at least 3. Surprisingly, the place was empty but it was a Monday night so that might not be any indication5. It has an excellent view of the F1 racetrack and they are running window table promotions at about S$300 per person during the F1. They still were handing us out the flyers so I presume this means that they still have space left.

- This is, of course, based on the fact that I am neither an expert or a connoisseur of Filipino food [↩]

- I am avoiding the obvious reason that most Singaporeans probably won’t even think to include Filipino food in their culinary selection [↩]

I’m usually very adventurous with my food and love most Asian cuisines. However Filipino food doesn’t do it to me at all, in fact it’s one of the few cuisines I avoid and could never adjust to. The only dish I remember positively from my numerous trips to Manila is similar to the crispy pata, crispy pig ears.

Yeah, but you eat funny food when you are over here so I’m not sure that saying that much.
