September 18, 2008 Smart Dog
It seems I still have something to learn about dogs and when they say that the smaller ones are smarter, I’d have to agree. The dog refuses to eat his medicine and no amount of forcing him can get him to take them. There was some success with one of the tablets that tasted of liver and hiding some of the other antibiotics in a marshmallow. But like any intelligent creature, he adapted quite quickly.
For the last two days, he avoided eating the liver tablet and he’d worked out that the marshmallow contained the dope. Getting him to eat it was near to impossible and we’ve had our tug of wills over it. I couldn’t get over the fact that here was a dog that was getting the better of me, intelligently.
So, I figured I would get his intelligence to work for me rather than against me. If he’s so damned smart, then maybe he can take his current reasoning to a new level. After an hour of some successful and not-so-successful attempts, I managed to get him to actually work out that he needs to finish his medicines first before he get a treat. Having some left over steak helped quite a bit because he goes nuts for it.
I’m quite proud of myself and the dog for that to be honest. Most parents can’t get their kids to eat their greens before the sweets come out. The dog and I did it in the space of an hour.

The problem with many small/toy dogs is that they’re quite strong-willed and very seldom trained, to any degree what-so-ever. Marshmallow and steak left-overs? Hmm.. what’s the medicine for? Diabetes or cholesterol?
Btw, what kind of Captcha is this, it’s showing me: ‘SS Whitehouse’

Yeah, well, I’m working on that. Still a few battle of wills going on. The same trick worked this morning with the pill although I wonder how long it will be before he adapts. Perhaps by the end of the week, we’ll have the bugger writing letters.
Right now he’s not eating much as it is because of his meds, so anything he does get down him should be beneficial.
