Eye of the Beholder

Oh, missed this marketing gaff (via Shaky and Fumier)…

Does it really matter what other people think of your body shape?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

For those of you outside of HK, the government is launching a campaign to make people apparently comfortable with their own bodies. The problem stems from a culture obsessed with beauty, beauty products, diet pills, diet clinics and other whatnot.

So according to the government, the best thing to do is to provide health as the solution. A complete transcript resides here. Executionally, the wording is wrong (no points for the obvious one above).

You look slim and gorgeous

Coupled with imagery of a smiling, happy camper reaping in the rewards of the compliment, it’s not exactly defining a problem.

The purpose of this ad is muddled to be honest. Sure, it’s health. But was the objective health or was it perhaps happiness? If it was health, than I do see this ad contributing more to the problem of this obsession with beauty.

That old eye of the beholder’s a killer, especially with it’s anti-magic cone …

Yeah, but then you just cast something like ice storm and bludgeon it to death. Or tell the thief in the party that’s legend has it that if you cut out the eye of a beholder while it is still alive, it turns into a pretty shiny thing.

Ice storm killing a beholder? You’ll be lucky…
