Went to the Sun Yanzi concert tonight… fucking amazing. My mate snaggled second row seats!!!! Not that we needed it since that girl has one of the most powerful voices that I’ve heard anyone sing with. A lot of singers need recording studios to add that power to their voices, but Stefanie proves on her CD’s that she doesn’t need and tonight’s performance cemented the deal for me.

She sang quite a few songs I knew but there were some thrown in that I didn’t know that well (or at all!). What I love about her is that she brings in elements and influences from around the world into her music. For example, she sang Green Light (the song that introduced me to her) which has obvious Riverdance influences, but then her To Be Continued… album was inspired by an Indian influence. She played quite a few songs from that album but there was also a tribal African affair going on in one song. Makes a change from many of the Canto-pop stars who only seem to be increasingly influenced by R&B and Hip-Hop coming from the States.

What I enjoyed was that she actually sang from the concert. Surprised? Well, see my post on the Sammi concert and you’ll know my gripe about attending a concert from many of the Chinese artists. My mate says that it’s because a lot of them won’t be able to carry a concert for the whole duration. Yanzi had absolutely no problem singing through for the three hours. Except that she did have one guest star appearance…

F.I.R.!!!!

I couldn’t believe it! I’m a fan of F.I.R. for pretty much the same reason that I’m a Sun Yanzi fan… the lead gal has an almost equally powerful voice. In most cases, this is backed up by a good rock tune behind it. They played one song I wasn’t familiar with but then they played Lydia. Not a great fan of the song, but it is a favourite and to hear it live was absolutely crazy. It’s good to know that Stefanie chose a guest band that complemented both her music style and her concert.

Not so much of a drawn out encore that Sammi had but she didn’t really need it. She pretty much rocked the place as it was. And the sign of a good artist is to keep ‘em wanting more. I wanted more… most definitely!

Highlight of the evening? She waved to my mate when she passed by our quadrant of the Hong Kong Coliseum (spelt that way apparently). Got some great photos too (hopefully) and will post ‘em up when I get them developed. Rock on, Stefanie!
