September 10, 2005 Dangers of Dungeons & Dragons
Oh this is too funny… here’s a little flash that educates on the dangers of Dungeons & Dragons (via Flying Chair).
So now you know how I spent my childhood.
However, it was interesting to note that a good proportion of the reader’s letters to Dragon Magazine (a magazine devoted to D&D) were from guys serving in the US military. The scientific argument being that RPG exposed the children to complex social dynamics (like good vs. evil), and is quite similar to the argument that video game players make for better soldiers.
One lie to rule them all, one lie to find them, one lie to bring them all and in the darkness bind them…

The online RPG forums are absolutely crawling with serving gamers. What with all that posting and gaming, there must not be that much to do in the military.

When I was in the cadets, I had an NCO tell me (who served in the Gulf War and numerous other places), war is 98% boredom and 2% adrenalin.
Alternatively, there is the example of the Dutch conscription lesson. Choose whether you want to sit and smoke cigarettes in a barracks (with no uniform since funding was cut) or conscientiously object and go to jail and smoke cigarettes.
