July 4, 2005 Lateness
I guess I can post this up now since it won’t be directed to anyone in particular. One of my pet hates is people being late. I actually hate it when I’m late myself, just so that you don’t get the impression that I’m saintly punctual.
I think the reason why it bothers me is that it’s so disrespectful. By arriving late, you are using up time that I could have spent otherwise. Yep, that’s right. You’re wasting my time. Essentially, the gripe kicks in when you realise that by wasting my time, you are thinking that your time is more important than mine. Sure, time management skills or a lack of them can be blamed, but you don’t have a problem meeting your boss on time or catching that flight for your holiday, right?
I think I’ll start a policy of leaving if I’m waiting for more than half an hour for someone.

I used to have a 20 minute rule for bints. 20 minutes late and the evening was off. Two strikes and they were out.
The worst is when people are so late that they obviously set out after they were already supposed to be there.
Sometimes, if Her Indoors is late after I have stopped what I was doing at work in order to be on time, I used to go back to the office so that, when she shows up, she has to wait for me to leave (again) and get over to the meeting spot (again).
She doesn’t do it (too much) any more.

Damned good policy if you ask me.
Of course, with most of the people I know, this would end up with me being friendless and all alone.
Perhaps a penalty might work. Last person to arrive after 20 mins of waiting pays for the night…
