April 14, 2005 Shooting Stars
Well, when you needed a reminder that we aren’t as superior as we think in the universe, here’s a pleasant thought for you. Colliding stars could wipe us out without so much as a warning. Well, perhaps not wipe us out. We apparently get the fun of living in a ozone depleted, frozen popsicle-like environment. What we do in centuries, nature can still do in ten seconds.

Yeah yeah blah blah blah…
A supernova could do the same. An asteroid could impact and do a similar job.
It’s just another case of the media reporting science badly, and scaring uninformed people in the process.

Who said I’m scared?
Anyway, I’m just adding this to the list of things that could kill us without us even lifting a finger.

Sorry, I wasn’t implying you were scared. But that’s the point of something like the Guardian reporting a story like that – it’s just to scare its readers. Or to tell them to eat a banana, mixed with charcoal dust and brewed under a new Moon, in order to be 1% less likely to suffer heart problems.
I’m fed up with people I know coming up to me (someone with some scientific training) and saying “Did you hear that story about X I read in the paper”. Lord only knows what real scientists must have to put up with…
Sorry, nothing to do with you, just venting.

I know what you mean. Yesterday the big news in Hong Kong was that eating dim sum will now kill you.
Well folks, living will kill you. That’s one thing you can be sure of.
