These Weblog Awards are a funny thing. I have to admit, I find it amusing to log in and see who is doing well and who is doing badly (like me). Evidently, I have no social life. You gotta respect the people that put the awards together but at the same time, I think it’s all rather pointless, and if you’re going to take them seriously at all, then do so in a lighthearted way.

It is with shame that I read Spirit Fingers today to find that she’s been receiving harassment from other competitors in her category of Best Newcomer. What are you people five years old or something? It is not like you win anything except a few more readers, who will like you if you’ve got something interesting to say regardless of whether you win Best Blog in Blah Blah category. If it means all that much to you, perhaps you might win again next year or is Best Newcomer the only category you have a chance at winning in ever?

People should be blogging after their own interests and rarely do I find that people do it to make a stab at popularity. The popularity in itself comes later if you’re any good at getting an audience. Of course, I’m not an expert at that but I just think that you shouldn’t be blogging to win awards. It’s also a nice perk that comes along with the time and effort you put into it, but it shouldn’t be the main reason. Except if you’re William… sorry, Conrad… from Gweilo Diaries, I suppose.

So it’s a shame when you hear of the blogging community, writers and readers alike, showing their ugly side, especially directed towards such an innocuous fashion site such as Spirit Fingers. There’s plenty of controversial sites out there that invite bite-back without people forcing it on other people. I personally think Spirit Fingers should win it outright, even the Hong Kong blog category.

It’s was also a little surprising to see that Glutter actually took the time to notice the Awards at all. Me, I’m an easy sell-out. I just didn’t think she had it within her.

Take it easy people. It’s only a game…
