December 17, 2004 Kray Wannabes
These days it’s not so much that I’m not eager to fight, it’s simply that I can’t be bothered. This is how I felt last night and today about an incident which happened to me as I was leaving karaoke. Just as I was about to leave the place, I got introduced to two twin brothers. In the casual way that you do when meeting people for the first time, and then departing immediately, I said to the older twin, “Hi and bye”. Apparently, he took it as an insult to his younger twin and proceeded to tell me not call his brother boy. He also kept asking if I was from the States too, perhaps thinking that everyone in the States really does call each other “bwaoy”.
Really, can you folks see that? Me from the States? Purlease… hell would have to do some more tricks than just freezing over for that to happen.
Anyway, he took it seriously, and there I was standing in front of my mates girlfriend and my friend (a gal), eyeballing this dopehead of a twin and his brother behind him. Thankfully his younger brother saw a little more sense than he did and the situation became disintangled. Of course, didn’t stop him from throwing some choice Cantonese insults at my back.
In a week where I’ve been told that I haven’t changed all that much, the situation is interesting for me. The old me probably would have been up for something. The new me can’t be bothered except to think about times when I probably would have been a little drunker and smashed a whisky bottle across his head.
But then, I learned something from my friend Ning to some degree. He once stopped me from getting into a fight because my girlfriend was with us. It’s sometimes the best course of action to just simply walk away when the situation isn’t all that appropriate.
Besides, you have to take into account that the dopehead’s English wasn’t the greatest in the world (which didn’t stop him styling himself into a wannabe hip hop gangsta) and have to make allowances for stupidity. I guess I’m magnanimous in that way. The next time will be different with me and my buddy Johnny Walker.
