December 15, 2004 Comment Spam
The joys of implementing scripts on your website are somewhat dulled by having to go around and patch everything yourself. Regular readers, although with no recent posts, I suspect the regular has somewhat diminished, will have noticed that someone trying to fob off online poker sites in the spam section of my comments sections.
For anyone out there using pMachine, suggest you go to their forums and implement some updates to your files. These typically would be:
comment.add.php
comment.fns.php
ip.fns.php
member.fns.php
Then add to your config.php file…
// BANNED URLS AND EMAILS ———————————————–
// Full or partial strings for banned emails and urls
// Separate each value with a comma and remember to put them in quotes
$banned_emails = array(‘mail.ru’,'polll@msn.com’);
$banned_urls = array(‘sex.com’);
In the banned urls, just add the banned URL’s from pMachines own blacklist, found here.
Full details to be found in this post on their forums titled Taking Care of Poker Spam (pMachine Pro Access Required).
As my friend Kit said, there is are plenty “nothing to do” people out there. Unfortunately, this happy chappie has plenty to do rather than plug holes that these “nothing to do” people want to stick their fingers in.
The worrying thing is that there has been an increase in spam activity in comments on blogging services and one wonders if they are taking advantage of the holiday season lull.
