December 9, 2004 Chihuahua Joey
I really have to wonder who exactly is behind the marketing of Joey Yung (容祖兒), one of EEG’s staple artists. She does turn heads (mostly foreigners’), she’s got an okay voice backed up with some catchy tunes, and hasn’t completely overplayed the acting hand, starring in a modicum of films compared to some in the Cantopop universe.
Yet, there seems to be an album in the works called Xmas Chihuahua with our dear Joey in a rather racy red outfit. Okay, it’s a temporary image from YesAsia, but one can almost hear the snickered remarks about bones and licking down in the foreign quarter of Wan Chai. It’s mildly amusing to know that Joey’s latest offering was “Give Love a Chance” released not two months prior to this Xmas release (yup, they flog their stars out here to produce). One would almost think that a more appropriately named title would be to “Give This Album a Chance”.
But I think everyone has a laugh at poor old Joey’s expense…
Afterall, with big posters proclaiming “Show Up!”, named after her last concert series and related album, one does wonder whether EEG was genuinely worried about a poor turn-out. And I’ll avoid making sordid allusions to the working girl connotations in her previously titled album 9 to 5 (cleverly, written “Nin9 2 5ive”).
At the end of the day, you have to hand it to Joey. She’s seems popular for reasons other than her looks with the local crowd. She seems popular with the foreign crowd for mainly her looks. And the rich and sleazy seem to love her just as much as the lowly teenager consuming her bi-monthly releases, albeit in slightly different ways.
Is this a rant to bitch about Joey? Yes it’s a rant, ’cause I haven’t ranted about anything in a while since I’m too busy these days. Is it to bash Joey? No, I think her songs are catchy and I’m too busy fancying her myself to wish her any malice. Keep it up Joey… well, me at least.

Yes don’t bash Joey. I’m surprised you haven’t commented on the Gweilo Diaeria site not being accessible. I’d like to think it was taken down because he was copying other peoples images, but I guess we’ll never know
