April 28, 2004 I hate Ikea
I also hate Ikea. They are like the Sony of the furniture world. Their crap, while it looks great for the first two years, starts to fall apart after that. What amazes me is that both companies are held as case studies at universities and give business writers jobs writing about them in esteemed titles like Time and Newsweek et al. Do you people not get it? It’s about selling crap that looks nice but doesn’t have a lifespan of more than two years. The business insight? They’ve made durables into consumables.

I’m sure you have plenty of business acumen Ooo with one o. (your time in HK with me should have introduced you to the concept of sarcasm).
Of course I realise what their business model is. Read the post, people. I just don’t think people should be going ooo-ah over it. Durables into consumables people.

Sounds like a perfect business model to me: Manufacture crap, sell it cheap (or not, in the case of Sony) and make sure it breaks in a few years so that people come back to buy a replacement. Where’s the sense in selling a product like a bookshelf if it’s going to last forever? The customer will never come back to buy another one! Of course, you could do what proper companies do and build quality products, build up customer loyalty, and have them come back to buy other products from your range. But when you have the advertising power of Ikea and, in particular, Sony, who cares? For every one person I know who buys quality stuff, I know ten others who buy almost soley based on brand-name. Actually the idea of it falls apart after two years is part of their business model. It’s CHEAP and it’s for all these young up and coming yuppies who would if the economy was right, start moving up thieir income and within two years they would want to buy all new furniture. So it breaks and you don’t feel guilty throwing it all out.
Just a thought.
