April 5, 2004 The Passion of the Christ
I went to see The Passion of the Christ with Sharon on Saturday. It was a very moving film since it realistically and graphically portrayed the last twelve hours of Jesus Christ. It personally had great significance for me and no doubt will with others brought up in the Christian faith. I got a chance to bore Sharon with my pundit’s take on religion after the film. Although she did put me to shame when I got Pilate and the centurion who converted at the crucifixion mixed up.
My experience was somewhat marred by the person behind me kicking me constantly throughout the film despite the IFC cinema rows giving a canyon’s worth of leg room. I also had one of the obligatory “I’ll switch my phone on silent but still answer it” people sitting next to me. It was also the first time that I’ve been to the IFC and I well enjoyed the “business class” seats that they offered. Although five minutes after the official showtime started, one wonders why they had three people serving one person at a time at the refreshments counter.
Anyway, I guess a movie “date” with Sharon was more than enough to make up for niggling complaints I’m moaning about. Go see the film, it’s well worth it and I am definitely getting this one on DVD. Read the full review of the film in the Reviews section – The Passion of the Christ.

And a comment about the movie:
It appears some see the movie slightly differently:

There is no denying that perceptions of the movie vary, it appears that some large segments of the audience do preceive the movie in an anti-semitic way.

Cool, finally on topic.
What is wrong with these people? As I said in my review, this was not the lesson that people should be taking from the film or the teachings of Jesus!
The film, I believe, was not anti-Semitic. I think anti-Semitic is an action that promotes hatred of the Jews but I don’t think that the audience should hate the Jews for that. It’s written in our holy books what happened, so it’s hard to portray them not as the “bad guys”. But so too, should a film on World War 2, inspire us to go and be anti-German or anti-Japanese and hate them?
Do they miss the subtle references to what Jesus was saying? To look past the hatred and the violence and see what he stood for?
At the end of the day, Jesus and those close to him were Jewish. The faith of Christianity owes a debt to the Jewish faith having started as a sect within the overall Jewish faith.
Suggestions of Jesus having a bloodline which continued into Europe well into the Middle Ages would make that Jewish blood. An assertion making the rounds now, is that Jesus was descended from the royal house of David. Which would make Him have a legitimate claim to throne of Israel.
Whatever the truth of the matter, Jesus was a Jew. For that, Christians should respect the faith in which He was fostered in. Muslims, too, if they count him amongst their prophets should see that. I guess that people sometimes see what they want to see and but don’t hear.
The film was not about hating anyone although I’ll admit, I hated what happened to Jesus while watching it. But this was balanced out by a timely insertion of one of Jesus’ lessons on forgiveness and compassion. The film was about His passion, His Love and His sacrifice. Not about hatred.
