Brimworld Back!

Brimworld is back online after a long disappearance (of course, you all knew that since you read the Links Section, right?). It’s done by a close friend of mine who I grew up with in the UK. His site was actually deployed before Eshin Direct came about and in it’s original incarnation was a nicely designed site but it was limited to just a Book Review, fan worship of Caterham 7’s and a Gastro Guide. However, as blogging scripts seem to have hit the marketplace and brought the world of websites to the masses, Brimworld did start to look a bit dated. I guess my friend realised this and up went the “Under Construction” signs. For a couple of years.

Anyway, now it’s back online. This time the menu of features has somewhat increased although I’m finding that all lot of the old information hasn’t made the migration to the new design. What you’ll find there (or more like promise to find there, since some parts are still under construction!) are a Gastro Guide (Dining Guide), Brim’s Kitchen (the author’s own recipes - he’s a cooking fanatic), Shops & Supplies (for food. As I said, he’s a cooking fanatic), oh and a blog too.

For some reason, he thinks I’m the expert in blogging which I find amusing. He even goes so far as to ask for me advice. Well…being no expert, all I can say is keep consistent about updating your content. If you feel like writing about something just get it up in your blog. It’s your site and you can spew whatever crap you like. It helps if the crap is marginally interesting though if you plan to get people coming back. Allow also for interactivity beyond the simple guestbook idea. People will like to add comments and respond to what you post up…like asking questions about the recipes you’ve got on your site. The Internet’s an interactive medium, just make sure you use it that way.

Apart from that, not much else. A lot of it is trial and error. I mean, I went nuts and divided my site into various different sections, but the truth is that most people will just read the main page. I’m quite attached to the work I did on creating the different section so I’m likely to keep them for a while but just look at the number of comments and view people leave in the other parts of my website should give an indication of how much time people really do spend looking at your site. Okay, I shouldn’t blame my audience of a handful of people of being lazy!

And just remember KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Clean graphics, clean layout, readable text…and wahey! Good luck with the website Dave!

I hate Ikea

I also hate Ikea. They are like the Sony of the furniture world. Their crap, while it looks great for the first two years, starts to fall apart after that. What amazes me is that both companies are held as case studies at universities and give business writers jobs writing about them in esteemed titles like Time and Newsweek et al. Do you people not get it? It’s about selling crap that looks nice but doesn’t have a lifespan of more than two years. The business insight? They’ve made durables into consumables.

Back…as if you noticed.

Right, been fairly lax with the updating of this site in the last couple of weeks. I guess after indulging away on my birthday, things started to get busy. The biggest thing to happen was that two mates finally went back down to Singapore to live - Ora and Eyal.

They had a leaving dinner arranged at Sorabol in Lee Theatre on Friday. I’ve spent last week running around trying to put together a photo album of pictures that would showcase some of the times we had together in Hong Kong. Of course, being the unemployed one, I was volunteered to do most of the legwork on the album. Of course, this was a mistake since that would mean I would have to write the almost-but-not-quite so witty copy in the album.

It also meant that the album would be late. Half-way through sticking in photos, with 15 minutes to spare before dinner, I ran out of glue. Thankfully, Greg bailed me out and bought some glue. Imagine, if you will, the two of us sitting in the reception foyer of Lee Theatre frantically gluing in photos in the book on the floor. Greg said it reminded him of when we were back at uni and he was already saving my bacon back then.

It was also a little silly ’cause the leaving couple’s friends all had to sign the book which was a little hard to organise during dinner. It was meant to be subtley done with one person each going off to sign it at a time. But I think the happy couple noticed when there were groups of four leaving the table at a time. You can only tell them people are going to the toilet so many times in a night before they start to suspect something’s up or something’s wrong with the food. Anyway, they appreciated the album in any case.

After dinner at Sorabol, we hit Shelter in Henry House. I keep forgetting that there are loads of bars in Henry House that are worth a try and have a decent view.

Aside from the leaving dinner, there has not been much else going on. I got two calls from headhunters to have a “get-to-know-you” chat with them. One of them was in Singapore and the other was in Hong Kong. So I might be buggering off to Singapore along with Eyal and Ora. But I doubt it. Anyway, these headhunters are after strategic planners so hopefully something pans out.

Right, now I gotta go bugger off and do some actual job hunting.
