Dotster Gripe
When I first got involved with building websites, my first domain name registrations were done through Dotster. Over the years it’s been a steady relationship but nothing special. A few introductions of new services and features but nothing that made me go and orgasm on my keyboard. But then again, why would you get that excited about domain name registrar facilities?
So the big problem I have with Dotster is that their prices remain at the US $14.95 price point, which I believe is a price point that is at least 5 or 6 years out of date. These days, it’s more reasonable to pay closer to $7-8 for a .com domain although it can be had for cheaper. For the average consumer, I doubt that they would be bothered too much by this. But for domain hogs like my self (I currently have about 30 domains registered), the price difference makes a big impact.
What peeves me about Dotster, who has slowly introduced great features and services but nothing that differentiates from others, is that when I transfer my domain to another service provider, they lock me in and tell me I have to pay attention to their last ditch attempt to keep me as a customer by offering me the low price of $8.
I know it’s price differentiation but I just feel that I should be rewarded with lower prices if I stay a loyal customer rather than threatening to leave. And getting into contact with their customer support to gripe about it is near to impossible. Anyway, off to godaddy.com it is.
What domains do you have?
The Man Himself
Most of ‘em are the .org, .net, .com equivalents of a name. Some are of ideas that I’ve come with to start community sites. Others are just registered for friends and stuff.
