February 19, 2004 Put ‘em in Their Place – Netherlands vs USA
Managed to catch the tail end of the Netherlands-USA football match. Thankfully, we beat ‘em 1-0 which wasn’t a great winning margin, especially against the US. The last 30 mins that I saw, the Dutch controlled most of the game and had plenty of chances to score but didn’t seem to anxious to push forward. I guess you can do that with 1-0 lead in a friendly international. They seemed to be also taking the opportunity to experiment and change players quite often too. Although, and I hate to admit it, the US did have a couple of chances to score which were all thankfully saved by the amazing Edwin van der Sar. (The commentary was all in Cantonese so I couldn’t really follow much else).
It was funny, it took me some time to realize who the Dutch were playing, since all the US names represented their mish-mash of different cultures. And I must say the 30 mins that I did see, they must have recruited some stuntmen for their team ’cause they kept on falling down.
Anyway, it was a pathetic win to be honest. I expect more from Dutch football especially against a nation that insists on calling it soccer. Well, at least, the family back in the Netherlands will be chuffed.
However, it was a win and should put those Yanks in place. I’m sure if the FBI was playing, then they’d all get a pat on the back and the match would have been rigged to have the US win. They’re not too hot on the laws of other countries at the moment.

Sorry to say Nadim but, although Holland has great individual players, their international team has been in decline for years now. Witness the fact that they only squeezed into the finals via the play-offs. Which is all a damn shame as I remember the great football they pulled out in the 80s and early 90s. They need to sort their problems as a team out and then we can all enjoy their talents again…

Couldn’t agree more with you.
I think it had something to do with individual players being too individualistic and egotistical, rather than coming through for the team, and the nation.
I hope they get their act together.
