It’s that Special Friday…
It’s Friday the 13th people. Woohoo!
I actually consider the date to be a lucky day. If you think about how the suspicion was drawn up, it was because there were 13 people at the last supper and I believe that Friday was supposed to be the day that Jesus was crucified. Friday isn’t per se bad, it’s just when you attach a 13 to it.
But, I have always wondered, why is the number 13 bad and hence the Last Supper bad? Because it included Judas? Or was it because it was the very last supper that Jesus had?
From my limited understanding of religious doctrine, isn’t one of the great things about Christianity that God had sent His own Son down to teach us and to die for our sins? If the last supper is A, then Judas’ betrayal is B, and the dying for our sins is C, then didn’t we all need for A to happen for B to happen in order for C to happen which was ultimately good.
So logically speaking, 13 is a number that should be celebrated because it represents all of Jesus’ disciples who were his chosen ones. The fact that Judas betrayed Jesus is not something for us to judge and given His teachings, I believed he would have turned the other cheek.
It’s even more ironic that 13 is a number to be feared with superstition. If you are truly religious, then you will know that the only thing you really need to fear is the wrath of God for not holding to His strictures, and not some co-incidental number that happened to share the same value of the number of people at the last supper. Yet, people still seem to think that fearing a number superstitiously is more appropriate than fearing the possibility of eternal damnation. How strange.
Although having said that, if you are not really Christian, then the number 13 has power in the old magick practices and the old Wiccan faith, I believe. Although, I do think people and culture give these things power unto themselves. For me, before studying Japanese culture, 4 was a perfectly safe number.
Anyway, regardless, it’s not like all the other days in the year have been particularly lucky (or unlucky). So why would this day be any different? (Eshin now promptly braces himself for rocky day ahead).
I think it’s an unlucky number, same goes for walking under ladders, seeing one blackbird….probably the way I was brought up.
seeing one blackbird??? there are tons of blackbird flying around all the time… especially in asia… tell you one remedy.. throw salt behind you and it ward of evil
The Man Himself
Walking under ladders is considered bad because it forms a triangle. And a triangular portal is a gateway to hell.
And Oooo I think it’s seeing only 1 blackbird not a whole bunch of them.
Yes only one is a bad sign, they’re evil little things. I know people who look out the window for ages if they only see one, so they can spot another one to pair it up.
I guess throwing salt at them is a different approach to getting rid of them!
I always thought Friday the thirtheenth was considered unlucky because it combined Friday, which was considered an “unlucky” day for many myths and legends, and thirteen, an unlucky number in many ancient cultures, too. Christ’s crucifixion occuring on a Friday and there being thirteen disciples at the Last Supper only served to reinforce the “unlucky” associations of the two combined. But as you pointed out, a day is unlucky only when you believe in it and give power to it by going out of your way to observe only “bad” things/incidents on that one day, isn’t it? Here’s an interesting read on possible historical explanations for the “Friday the thirteenth” superstition: http://urbanlegends.about.com/cs/historical/a/friday_the_13th_3.htm

Truly so. Alternatively…
The basis of Wiccan magick rituals is that everything in the real world plane can be affected by things on the so called astral plane of existence which is involved with thought forms and ideas.
So, if you’ll be with me, the more you give power to a thought, the more power it really has. So if everyone believes that something has power, than it does in reality. Hence, Friday the 13th is only powerful if you believe in it along with everyone else.
Anyway… my Friday was fine and perfectly fine. It was good in fact.
How can your friday be fine eshin. its a day before valentines day..and I suppose it should make yours worst
The Man Himself
I’m at a place where I’m no longer insecure about being by myself. So I don’t need the validation of someone else to feel good about myself. Valentine’s Day is for people chasing after girls and new couples.
When I was in a relationship, I always did something, but to be honest, you have the other 354 days to prove you love someone.
So why would Valentine’s Day be my worst? Except with you rubbing it at every opportunity. As I said, you give days, people, things power over you only if you let them.
I’d love someone to do a statistical analysis of whether significantly more bad things happen on Friday 13th than any other day in the year. That would stop all this crazy superstition dead in its tracks.
The Man Himself
You would have to do an analysis of every Friday and every 13th day.
I reckon people will go out of their way to notice these things, as per Karen’s comments.
