It’s Friday the 13th people. Woohoo!

I actually consider the date to be a lucky day. If you think about how the suspicion was drawn up, it was because there were 13 people at the last supper and I believe that Friday was supposed to be the day that Jesus was crucified. Friday isn’t per se bad, it’s just when you attach a 13 to it.

But, I have always wondered, why is the number 13 bad and hence the Last Supper bad? Because it included Judas? Or was it because it was the very last supper that Jesus had?

From my limited understanding of religious doctrine, isn’t one of the great things about Christianity that God had sent His own Son down to teach us and to die for our sins? If the last supper is A, then Judas’ betrayal is B, and the dying for our sins is C, then didn’t we all need for A to happen for B to happen in order for C to happen which was ultimately good.

So logically speaking, 13 is a number that should be celebrated because it represents all of Jesus’ disciples who were his chosen ones. The fact that Judas betrayed Jesus is not something for us to judge and given His teachings, I believed he would have turned the other cheek.

It’s even more ironic that 13 is a number to be feared with superstition. If you are truly religious, then you will know that the only thing you really need to fear is the wrath of God for not holding to His strictures, and not some co-incidental number that happened to share the same value of the number of people at the last supper. Yet, people still seem to think that fearing a number superstitiously is more appropriate than fearing the possibility of eternal damnation. How strange.

Although having said that, if you are not really Christian, then the number 13 has power in the old magick practices and the old Wiccan faith, I believe. Although, I do think people and culture give these things power unto themselves. For me, before studying Japanese culture, 4 was a perfectly safe number.

Anyway, regardless, it’s not like all the other days in the year have been particularly lucky (or unlucky). So why would this day be any different? (Eshin now promptly braces himself for rocky day ahead).
