January 10, 2004 WMD Search Called Off
Well…I’m a little slow on the uptake of things these days. But apparently, the US has called off its search for WMD (see article here. And apparently Powell near to admitted that the linkage between Al-Qaeda and Iraq or WMD and Iraq was tentative at best.
Well, hold on a sec, why did we go into Iraq in the first place? Mr. Bush and Powell (oh, that grinning idiot Tony Blair also made some noises) stood before the UN and gave us their “solid case” for war in Iraq and that the WMD’s was the primary reason for the war. Now, we haven’t proof of any WMD’s found except the empty cannisters hidden away somewhere, so presumably, we’d like to find them?
It sort of makes the reason why the Americans went in one big lie if they don’t actually bother to find them. We all know the reason why the war was waged was to serve US interests in terms of oil and (security) peace of mind. But now it appears that they are doing away with the pretence and, as the article states, the manpower is being diverted to dealing with “anti-insurgency duties”. Strange that…why don’t they do away with that pretence and just say they are colonizing the place. Oh wait, I doubt ol’Jed and Martha would want to settle down in the new Iraqi Province of the US. So I doubt it’s for colonization…maybe exploitation is more appropriate.
Damn, I want to know if Iraq has WMD’s. I need the proof now that apparently the war has been won. I need to know that thousands of British servicemen and women and even the handful of Dutch logistical support personnel put their lives on the line for the actual reason they were sent there. I need to know that “yes, Iraq posed a threat to me and mine” because British personnel died under foreign skies believing that Iraq did in fact pose that threat. I need to know that the US administration is not going to dishonour the memory of allied men and women his personnel killed because of their own incompetence, aka friendly fire.
This whole escapade in Iraq has been a sham. Bring the troops home. Let the Iraqi’s sort out their own damned problems. My guess, though, is that we’ll find the WMD just before the election in the US. It’ll give Bush the chance to play the hero just before the final votes are cast. Damn that Saddam, he got captured too soon for Bush’s own political agenda.
