A little known fact is that I wanted to join the army. One problem I had with that is that I didn’t quite qualify for the two nation’s armies that I could join. Britain wouldn’t have me because I had a Dutch passport and, even if I converted, I wasn’t born in British territories. The Netherlands wouldn’t have accepted me because my Dutch wasn’t good enough.

Another problem was that it didn’t pay that well. I was set on joining one or the other at 16 and I had expressed as much to my mother. Although I’ve never discussed it with them, I think my mother told my father to sit down and have a chat with me about my future career plans at that age. Hence, I’m now in advertising… Seriously, thanks mum and dad. I have a feeling I would be in Iraq now fighting an unjust war.

So, I’ve decided to live out my fantasies of playing soldier through Paintball. Not the same thing but its a fix… Also, while I’m in Hong Kong, I’m looking to take part in Airsoft. It uses realistic weapons and is more “authentic”. It uses replica guns that fire BB’s at you. I hear it’s not quite as painful as paintball.
