Pret-a-Manger has this annoying habit of putting their cheap plastic cutlery out in front for the customer to help themselves to. They do this in the upright position, so when you grab your fork, knife or spoon, your dirty hands (plus the world’s) touch all the other FKS’ that are available. I’m reasonably sure that I got sick in October because I forgot to sterilize the fork or spoon I used from there.

During the SARS fiasco earlier this year, they did make the “sanitized” staff hand out the utensils with each order. It saw the introduction of some additional and effective hygiene measures taken around Hong Kong. People and businesses took extra measures to ensure that they were percieved to be clean, even if the were not actually so in realilty. Yet it seems a distant memory for some businesses.
